How to line a garage roof.
If the line does not continually follow the bottom of the beam and the bottom of the beam is below the line the beam is sagging.
In either case you will need to follow the general steps below to insulate your garage roof.
Remove all of the shingles on the roof.
Remove the jack quickly and set the iron onto the entire beam.
Place a pitchfork flat garden shovel or shingle scraper under the shingle.
Check the ceiling for sagging by attaching a string on one end of the beam and run it along the bottom edge of the beam.
A couple of weeks ago we published a two part series showing how a local roofing contractor shingled a roof with architectural shingles.
They form an upside down v with the point at the top of the addition roof.
However if you have a cathedral style garage roof you will need a scaffolding to get into the upper areas of the roof.
Place the jack back underneath the beam but this time under the iron piece.
Cut two rafters with a circular saw to the pitch of the addition roof and nail them across the rafters on the old roof.
Then lower the jack down a little at a time so that the metal can take the weight of the roof.
Drive the remaining carriage bolts into the two by six rafter and tighten them all up.
The first step is to the basement first.
Pry the shingle from the roof.
In this episode of how to build a garage we wrap up wall framing with the front garage door header and move right on to overhangs.
If you have a flat garage roof and an attic above you can install the garage insulation from below using a standard ladder.
